The bedroom is the living space where many individuals spend a large majority of their time while in their residences. Individuals with disabilities may encounter some difficulties in maneuvering, performing daily activities, and/or accessing furniture. There are many strategies, adaptations, and technologies that can assist an individual in the bedroom. Bedrooms should be designed for comfort, accessibility, and functionality.

Some individuals with disabilities require turning from side to side every 2 to 4 hours as a preventative measure in decubiti (pressure ulcers) care. Others may need to sleep in a semi- sitting position for other reasons such as bronchial problems.

Although significant or complete reduction in assistant care may not always be possible, greater independence and flexibility can be achieved through the use of motorized adjustable beds and hospital beds. This technology can also be beneficial to the personal assistant. There are a few differences between adjustable beds and hospital beds.

Hospital beds typically can be paid for by insurance and these purchases are usually processed with little difficulty. The choice in size is limited and it looks like a hospital bed. However, hospital beds have one feature not characteristically found in adjustable beds without significantly altering the price. The entire bed can raise and lower to accommodate preferences for transfers and assistant care.

An adjustable bed looks and feels like a regular bed and comes in various common sizes, i.e. twin, full, queen, etc. In addition, the head and feet can raise or lower to individualized comfort levels. There are also models capable of tilting, massaging and heating. The mattresses may be made of visco-elastic foam, air-filled, latex, and/or coil materials. These kinds of beds are aesthetically pleasing and easy to match with existing décor.

As the name suggests, an adjustable bed (also called a Semi-Fowler bed, as it places the patient in a semi-Fowler position) can be adjusted to a number of different positions. For individuals with certain types of back problems, sleeping on an adjustable bed that is at a slight incline (e.g. 30 to 45 degrees) may be comfortable, with the upper body positioned higher up than the lower body (as when sitting in a recliner) and some support under the knees to bend the knees at a slight angle.

The combination of upper body incline and the knee support can help take some of the stress off the lower back. Provided that the patient is comfortable sleeping in this manner through the night, this position can support the curves of the spine and relieve pressure on the entire body.

Basically, an adjustable bed has the potential to help anyone who feels more comfortable in an inclined position (such as sitting on a recliner with the feet up) rather than when lying on a regular flat mattress. The following provides a few examples of certain back conditions and how an inclined position in an adjustable bed can sometimes help the patient feel more comfortable

For some people with degenerative spondylolisthesis, sleeping in a reclining position with support under the knees can reduce some of the pain discomfort in the lower back, making it easier to sleep through the night.

Individuals with osteoarthritis in the spine, or facet joint arthritis, often wake up feeling quite stiff and sore in the morning. Sleeping on an adjustable bed may possibly provide better support and therefore decrease the irritation by minimizing joint compression.
In addition, after having low back surgery, some patients feel that an adjustable bed is more comfortable than a flat mattress. Like most choices when it comes to mattresses, this is largely a matter of personal preference.

In general, it is reasonable for a patient to consider the option of an adjustable bed if he or she feels better sitting in a reclining chair with the knees supported or slightly elevated and if he or she is having trouble getting a good nights rest on a conventional flat mattress. If a patient is not sure if they would benefit from an adjustable bed, or is not sure about buying a new bed, then it is also possible to use pillows to prop up the upper body (being careful to provide support for the lower back) and placing a pillow beneath the knees.

People, those who have pain in their backs should be careful in choosing the type of adjustable bed and mattress for sleeping on.

There are a number of options to adjust these beds to different positions, this is why the name is “adjustable” bed. These beds are also known as Semi-Fowler beds, and can be operated manually as well as electrically.

Patients will get their ultimate comfort by using these adjustable beds. These adjustable beds also come with luxury foam mattresses.

Functioning of Adjustable Beds

Sleeping on these adjustable beds may be more comfortable for the patients with different types of back problems, as the bed is slightly inclined to an angle of 30 to 45 degrees. In this case with the help of adjustable beds, the upper part of the body is positioned higher than the lower part when sitting in a recliner.

There is also some support under the knee which helps the knee to bend at a slight angle. With the help of this combination (i.e. the upper part of the body inclined at some angle and the support at the knee) helps a lot in relieving the stress off the lower back. This position of the bed provides support to the curves of the spine and thus the entire body feels to be relieved.

There are also different luxury foam mattresses for these adjustable beds. A Split-top foam mattress is one such type of luxury foam mattresses for adjustable beds, which allow people to adjust the head and feet according to the ultimate comfort of sleeping, independent of their sleep partner.

Nowadays there are also different electronically controlled adjustable beds available in the market, with the help of advanced technology and precision engineering. These types of electronic beds come with a full range of relaxing positions i.e. it allows the patients to position the bed easily in different position while reading, watching television, talking on phone and relaxing, which relieves their muscle strain. Patients can even control the adjustments of the bed with the help of remote controls.

Benefits of adjustable beds

There are lots of benefits of using adjustable beds. Adjustable beds provide help not only to the patients but also to anyone who feels more comfortable in relaxing in an inclined position or while sitting on a recliner with his feet up rather than lying on an ordinary flat mattress.

People, those who have Degenerative spondylolisthesis, Osteoarthritis and Spinal stenosis, for them sleeping in a reclining position can make it easier to sleep comfortably all through the night.

If the patient feels that his or her night’s rest is being hampered by sleeping on an ordinary flat mattress and feels better to relax in a recliner that gives the ultimate comfort to the patient, then it is very important to consider the option of an adjustable bed. There are different types of bed or mattress’s that work for all patients with back problems.

The patient’s own choice of sleeping comfort helps in determining which type of bed or mattress will be the best and will relieve the pain or stiffness in the lower backbone.

Adjustable beds, also known as Semi-Fowler beds, can be adjusted in position to suit the requirements of the user. Those who have medical conditions that require them to sleep in certain positions generally use adjustable beds. They may be also used by those who are temporarily or permanently bed-ridden to make them sleep more comfortably. Sometimes, even those without medical needs can use adjustable beds just to have a comfortable sleep.

Adjustable beds can be altered into a comfortable position as per the sleepers requirements. They are very comfortable for reading or for watching TV in bed. They are also ideal for people who have bad sleeping problems due to stress, body strain or other discomforts. As the adjustable beds can be molded according to the persons body structure, they provide utmost comfort and relaxation. Adjustable beds are also very strong and can support weights of more than 600 pounds.

Adjustable beds are made in two styles: standard or heavy-duty. Adjustable beds are comprised of two main components: the base and the mattress. There are several features to be considered while buying an adjustable bed: the size of the mattress (twin, queen, king or full) and the type of mattress (foam, latex, coil spring or air). Ordinary mattresses cannot be used on adjustable beds. The mattresses for adjustable beds are also specially designed to suit the human body. This helps to relieve strain on certain parts of the body and proper spinal alignment. They are also provided with adjustable rails on either side.

Adjustable beds come in various guises -the pocket spring mattress or the modern foam mattresses. Adjustable beds can be electronically controlled through a controller. The head, neck, shoulders, upper and lower back, hips, thighs, legs and feet can be comfortably positioned on the bed by adjusting the different parts of the bed. This can be done by the simple touch of a button.

There are several health benefits from adjustable beds. Adjustable beds ease swelling of the legs or edema and ease back pain. They relieve soreness of the body and sooth next and shoulder tension. They also offset acid reflux and nighttime heartburn. They provide relief for certain parts of the body such as the neck, the spine and the knees. Adjustable beds are especially useful for people who have degenerative spondylolisthesis, osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, asthma, phlebitis, varicose veins, back pain or neck pain. They are also ideal for people who have just undergone surgery. Adjustable beds also make it easier to get in and out of bed; relieve the heart muscle to make breathing easier; soothe stomach muscles and aid in proper digestion; and are also ideal for passive back stretching, etc. Some adjustable beds also have built-in massaging motors in the automatic as well as manual modes.

There are many kinds of adjustable beds in the market, which can be chosen as per the personal requirements of the user. There is no single type of adjustable bed that is suitable for everyone. Professional medical advice can also be sought before buying an adjustable bed. The right kind of bed is all the more important for people who are bed-ridden or to those who have to remain in bed for long hours. Adjustable beds are also available for children with disabilities.

Choosing a comfortable bed and mattress

The type of bed and mattress is a critical decision for people with back problems. While little is known about the type of mattress is good for the back and little medical information about adjustable beds, there are still a lot of questions as to whether or not an adjustable bed is a better alternative for flat mattresses for people suffering from back problems.

How an adjustable bed works

As the name implies, adjustable beds (also called a Semi-Fowler bed), can be attuned to various positions. Sleeping slightly inclined gives comfort to people with back problems with the upper body slightly elevated than the lower body and support to the knees at a slight angle. This position eases some stress off the lower back. It provides support to the spinal curves and lightens the pressure on the entire body.

Potential benefits of an adjustable bed

An adjustable bed provides comfort sleeping slightly inclined compared to lying on a regular flat mattress. How certain back conditions can be lightened up and give more comfort provided to people are seen in the following situations

* Degenerative spondylolisthesis. Adjustable beds reduces the pain discomfort in the lower back allowing a comfortable sleep the rest of the night.

* Osteoarthritis. This back problem is accompanied by stiffness and sore during the morning. Adjustable beds give better support by lessening compression in the joints.

* Spinal stenosis. People with this back problem find comfort bending forward rather than standing upright. Flat mattresses provide lesser comfort compared to sleeping inclined which is offered by adjustable beds.

After undergoing surgery in the lower back, patients felt more comfort using adjustable beds compared to flat mattresses.

While a patient may not be sure of the benefits from an adjustable bed or is unsure of purchasing a new bed, a possible option is by propping up the upper body by using pillows beneath the knees.

Patient’s preference should determine the choice of bed and mattress

Sleeping comfort is still the determining factor in the choice of bed or mattress. No particular type of mattress or bed is guaranteed to work for all patients, and no medical studies proves that adjustable beds are preferable. Whatever bed or mattress gives sleep comfort without extra pain is deemed as the best option.

Sleeping or lying down is the only time in which complete relaxation is experienced by the muscles, ligaments and the spine. A person suffering from a back injury needs to have a good sleep in order to help in the healing process.

They can also be operated electronically by the user and without an attendant.

Medical adjustable beds are particularly useful for disabled, elderly and invalid users, regardless of whether the handicap is permanent or temporary. Their very lightweight control can adjust the head, foot motors, as well as the massaging unit, all simultaneously.

The main components of a medical adjustable bed are: the vertical lifter, the motors, battery backup, retractable cot sides, optional cot side protectors, base cut-outs, locking castors, reflex multi-zone mattress, and therapeutic massage system.

Adjustable beds come in various guises like the pocket spring mattress or the modern foam mattresses. They are also available with the option of screw-in or fixed legs. Fixed-leg beds are more suitable for nursing, allowing positioning the feet of various medical apparatus under the bed.
