Tips on Selecting a Futon Bed

There are many types of futons, also known as a futon bed, and they can possess many advantages for you and your home. They are very versatile, and can be changed from a bed to a couch usually in a very short time with little effort at all. That is basically what a futon bed is: a pece of furniture that can be used as either a bed or a sofa. They are usually very affordable and can be purchased as a set. Futons, otherwise known as futon beds, are usually made up of a mattress, a futon cover, and a frame.

The futon mattress of a futon bed is usually not as thick as a regular bed mattress, and can be filled with foam, cotton, innersprings, polyester and/or viscoelastic foam. These can be on their own or layered to provide a nice level of comfort and durability, and are usually precision tufted to keep the contents of your futon mattress from shifting. Of course, the more you pay, the higher quality mattress you can expect to get.

The frame of a futon bed, however can be pretty much whatever you want it to be. They can be made of wood, such as oak, pine, maple, and others can be made of metal or rattan. Whatever they are made of, you can be sure to easily find one with a great design and that is stylish enough to fit the decor of your home to a “T”.

The thing about the futon bed is that they can be a great solution to any office, dorm room, bonus room or any other room where space can be a concern. They are fantastic for a home office, because they can transform your home office into an extra bedroom in very little time to accommodate your house guests. Most futons are either bi-fold or tri-fold, which basically describes the number of flat surfaces that make up the futon. When you pick out the futon bed for you, make sure you open and close it, because you want something that effortlessly converts from a bed to a couch for you. After all, who wants to struggle with a heavy mattress and frame when you are ready for bed? The easier the better. So whatever look you go with, make sure the design is convenient like a futon should be.

A Guide to Platform Bed Plans

Do you want to try your hand at building a platform bed? For those of you who don’t yet know what a platform bed is, it’s an exciting, old way of sleeping that incorporates a simple, elegant frame and a single mattress. Its lines have been used in Europe, Scandinavia, and Japan for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Platform beds can be made of wood or metal. If you’re looking to build a platform bed, you’re probably thinking about wood.

Platform beds can be extremely simple. The extremely simple platform beds have no headboard or footboard, and certainly no canopy. They incorporate slats, which, in effect, replace the need for a box spring, since, because they are sturdy yet somehow slightly flexible, support the single mattress on top. The result is that you get a good night’s sleep, are very comfortable, and yet don’t end up with back pains or numb muscles in the morning.

It’s ever better for your back than sleeping on the floor. And now, with the rapid proliferation of memory foam, your platform bed can be even more comfortable and healthy. Memory foam is a gel-like polymer that accepts your shapes and bones, but supports it fully. (It was first used in hospitals, and is now a popular mattress and pillow material.)

Platform bed plans can be more complex too; you can add headboards, footboards, canopies, even extra flourishes and storage units. You can build the storage units as one with the bed frame, or you can create rolling drawers supported by castors, so that the drawers are modifiable and easily maneuverable throughout your bedroom.

It’s not the most difficult job in the world for a handyperson. If you want to build a platform bed, you can order platform bed plans from any of a number of plans retailers. Woodworking clubs, furniture enthusiast groups, and other organizations can give or sell you plans. You can also buy plans online.
