Bed Pillow Buying Guide

Size:

Most pillows come in 2 sizes: Standard and King. King size pillows can be too long and unyielding, so you may want to consider using 3 standard pillows instead of 2 King Size for a King Size mattress. Some companies offer a Queen Size pillow which is often a happy medium between the other 2 sizes.

Sleep Position:

The position you normally sleep in is a major factor when deciding what pillow you want to purchase for yourself. Back sleepers normally need thinner pillows, while a side sleeper could use some extra support to keep their neck properly aligned. Contour type pillows work well for either situation. Stomach sleepers need to be careful not to get a pillow that is too thick, so they don’t suffocate on the pillow.

Filling:

If you prefer a very thin Pillow, Down or synthetic Down would work fairly well for you. If you prefer a supportive pillow, memory foam or latex would suit you well. Memory foam will react to your heat and the weight of your head and slowly conform around your head and neck to provide great support. Latex pillows are more bouncy than memory foam and bounce back faster. If you move around a lot, a latex pillow would be better for you than memory foam. Memory foam normally takes 30 to 60 seconds to go back to its natural shape and moving during that period could force you to wake up.

Firmness:

Pillows offer different levels of firmness. With a Down pillow you can get one that is very thick or very thin. Which you would choose is based on your preference and how you sleep. Memory Foam Pillows come in different shapes, firmnesses, and densities. For a pillow, 3 lb. density seems to work best. It is soft, yet supportive. Remember that we are talking about pillows and not a mattress. What is good enough to support your head is not necessarily best for your entire body. A contour pillow can be arranged to suit you no matter how you sleep. A comfort or standard shaped memory foam pillow is normally a memory foam shell with small clusters of memory foam inside. This is our favorite pillow due to its level of softness and conformity. A latex pillow is very supportive and conforms without a memory. That means that it will bounce back to its original shape immediately and works well for someone that moves around a lot.

Covers:

The cover you would use for your pillow depends on the pillow itself. Memory foam pillows normally come with a removable, washable cover. A pillow case is not necessary when these covers are included and honestly the memory foam will react to a person faster if one is not used. Latex and standard type pillows should be covered by a pillow case to keep it from becoming stained. Make sure you keep the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions in case your pillow gets dirty.

The Bottom Line:

With any type of bedding purchase, the bottom line is preference. You would be best off testing every pillow you can think of and deciding for yourself what you like. This guide should help to steer you in the right direction.

Bunk Beds Change, People Don’t

I remember vividly the day my family moved from Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Chicago. I was all of ten years old and like any child would be, excited to see the city. My father had received a promotion at the bank he had worked at since well before I was born and we were now leaving the relative comfort of our home for an apartment on Michigan Avenue. Driving into the city was almost surreal, and although sullen over leaving my friends behind, I was enthralled with the possibility of great opportunities that lay ahead. All the wonder and amazement I was experiencing after having traveled through the concrete canyons of the Windy City was soon overshadowed by the news that my father decided to impart to me the moment we entered our new domicile. I would be sharing a room with my younger brother.

I recall the feeling one might have if a death sentence were handed down to him over some petty offense. The fact that they wanted me, a sophisticated young lad who was sure than manhood was only weeks away (and had been for years), to share my personal space with this unworldly little snot-nosed brat was unbearable. Looking back, I now have a great appreciation for sharing a room with my brother and what I learned from the experience, but at the time, I would have preferred a root canal. Although we rarely got along, it didn’t take long to get used to the situation. Still, I never got used to sleeping on our bunk bed. Of course, we fought tooth and nail over who would get the top bunk. Once I established dominance, I was free to climb the small metal ladder to my throne on high and become master of all I surveyed in my miniature kingdom below. Unfortunately, my throne left much comfort to be desired, and I was told on more than one occasion that my brother wasn’t too happy with his vassel’s parcel either. Although the bed was new, it creaked and swayed with the slightest movement and had mattresses that I was certain were made of stone. I became resigned to life with my brother, but neither of us could reconcile with that awful bed. To give you an idea of just how poorly constructed bunk beds were at that time, I left home (and the bunk bed) to join the military at eighteen and on my first night of basic training, felt that I was sleeping in the Lincoln Bedroom at the White House.

It’s now a lifetime later and I have two boys of my own. My wife and I recently had a new addition, and she has taken one of their rooms, leaving them with one to share. Recalling with no particular fondness my bed of the past, I set out to find a bunk bed that would at least allow the boys some comfort during sleep. I was pleasantly surprised to find a manufacturer who makes nice beds that actually sleep like a bed should. When searching, I found beds that have storage, full sized mattresses and are solid and sturdy. After careful consideration, I purchased a nice model and brought it home. The minute I had it set up, the age old struggle for top bunk began and I stood there with a grin on my face while my sons argued over who would be king of the hill. While that matter has been settled, they still don’t always get along. They do, however, get a good nights sleep. I’m glad bunk beds have changed, because boys haven’t.

Buying The Right Comforter For Your Bed

Putting the right comforter on your bed can make the whole bedroom look fabulous. Comforters are the most visible of all the bedding pieces, so when you change the comforter you make a large change in the decor of the bedroom itself. But comforters are also very functional as they make for a very warm, and soft bed to sleep in too. But getting the right comforter for your bed takes some thought and preparation, and this article will help you make the right decision when you buy.

The first factor in choosing the right comforter is to make sure that it actually fits your bed. This may sound like a simple thing, but not all mattresses are the same size because of their design. If you have a very standard mattress it will most likely fit into one of the conventional categories like “Full”, Queen”, or “King”.

But many mattresses these days are not standard sizes because mattress makers have gone to adding more features like pillow tops on one side or sometimes both sides of the mattress. This means that the mattress is now much thicker than it would normally be. And that will also affect the size of any bedding that you are now able to put on that bed. That’s why it’s always a good idea to measure your bed and mattress to make sure that you know what size comforter to get beforehand and won’t have to be faced with the prospect of having to return the bedding that you love when you find that it just doesn’t look right on your bed.

When considering a comforter look at the TPI or threads per inch too. This figure will often give you a good idea of the quality level that has been put into that comforter. Generally speaking thread counts above 250 produce a soft and comfortable feel and fabric that will last a long time. Try to avoid thread counts below 200.

It’s also not a bad idea to look for a comforter that has patterns on both sides. That way you can change the look of the bed from time to time and not just have the same pattern all the time.

If you are in the market for a down comforter, the most expensive kinds will have pure white down in them, but actually a mixture of down and feathers will do the job nicely and is not as expensive. Just avoid so-called down comforters that have a really low ratio of down to feathers. The higher the down ratio in the comforter the more important that the cover be what is called “down proof” because down is so small and can actually work its way through a normal cover. Usually this designation is listed on the comforter package.

Finally, be sure that a down comforter is stitched so that the insulation material cannot move about very freely or shift. If the stitching is not in place the down can shift so that some parts of the comforter do not even offer much insulation at all. This is widely known, and most down comforters will have necessary stitching in place on the quilt, but just make sure before you buy.

Buying a good quality comforter is an investment in practicality and appearance at the same time. Use these guidelines for choosing your new comforter and you should be happy with it for years to come.

Beds – Discounts Should Be Asked For

Ok so you need to get a youth bunk bed, wooden bunk bed or some other kind of bed item or accessory, lets imagine for a minute you have chosen the bed store from which to purchase from and your finger is just about to press the buy icon, did you contemplate asking this bed merchant for a discount? The answer is probably no.

Previously before people were able to get access to things like loft bed with trundles and other great bed products with the help of the web you would visit your closest bedding supplier, choose a product that was being sold at a discount and hand over the cash. I personally am one of those people who would pick out something like a double bed frame or another good bedding merchandise with the full intention of bargaining with the store owner in order to get a modest price discount.

Requesting cost reduction whilst you are acquiring a bed or related item might sound all very nice when a customer is actually visiting a bed store but surely this won’t be applicable to purchasing items via internet based bedding vendors and such like? well this is not so because you are about to find out about the art of haggling for a bargain bed via the internet. So for example say you have visited a number of bed portals and are aware of the rough cost of the item or the bedding accessory you wish to acquire [ again lets suppose you are needing a double bunk bed kit ], now make a note of all the smaller bed internet stores, what you are hunting for is a bed or bedding supplier that clearly not one of the well known vendors or corporations. As soon as you have your list of the smaller bed specialists you are prepared to do virtual battle in order to get a knock down bed purchase.

The main thing to be aware of is that nearly all the small bed portals will be more likely to deal with you because they will probably be more eager to obtain a sale and maybe your future custom. Now lets pretend you need a twin size bed frame or king size bed mattress, to be quite honest the details of the bed or goods you are looking for, simply pick about 7 of the smaller bed websites you have discovered and email them the details of the best priced item you are interested in ordering, simply ask all the vendors, might they possibly be able to offer you some type of discount in order to compete with the other prices, explain to these folk that you would really prefer to do business with a family oriented bed business instead of a large uncaring chain.

If you are willing to put in a little extra time when buying a bed then hopefully the chances are your extra work will be well worthwhile and the bargains you are given will be well worth both your trouble and work.

How To Choose A Good Camping Bed

Good Camping Beds

Camping is a great way to enjoy the outdoors. But, nothing will bring that good time to a halt faster than having to sleep on cold, lumpy ground. Being uncomfortable will hamper sleep and make everyone irritable and tired. Using good quality bedding however, will help make sleeping outdoors much more comfortable, allowing a good nights sleep. You can wake up refreshed and ready to start your day hiking or canoeing or just relaxing.

Sleeping bags are the traditional method of sleeping outdoors, but putting even the best sleeping bag on the hard ground can prove uncomfortable. Using a camping bed in conjunction with a sleeping bag can provide comfort and warmth. Camping beds are sold in outdoor sporting goods stores and can also be found by shopping on the Internet. There are a variety of camping beds available and one is sure to meet your needs.

Inflatable beds are beds that are cushioned with air. These require use of an air compressor or pump to inflate. There are also self inflating beds available which provide convenience but cost a little more. The beds provide a comfortable sleeping area. Some inflatable beds are bulky, though, and may be also be heavy. Because they are inflatable, there is also chance for puncture. Ensure they are used on flat ground with no sharp objects in the way. Inflatable beds come in single sizes all the way up to king size to fit more than one person.

Cots are a great way to stay off the ground. Because they are raised, these are ideal for use in wet weather or cold weather. Adding a sleeping bag on top of the cot will provide warmth and a bit more cushion. Cots are portable and fold up easily to store in small areas. However, they may be awkward to carry long distances. Cots typically are for single use and have weight limitations.

Sleeping mats are foam liners that are set beneath a sleeping bag for added comfort. These mats are quickly becoming standard gear for camping use. The foam absorbs any rocks or hard surfaces that may prevent a restful sleep. These mats come in varying thicknesses and roll up for convenient storage. Sleeping mats are generally easy to carry and are a good option for use when not near a permanent camp site. Smaller thickness mats may provide minimal padding, so it advisable to invest in a high quality, thick mat.

Choose a camp bed with care. Consider the type of environment you will be in and weather conditions before making a decision. If you need to walk a distance from your parking area for sleeping, consider the weight and portability of the type of bed. Use of a camping bed can provide a much more restful sleep than sleeping on hard, rocky ground.

Buying The Right Bed Sheets For Your Bed

You spend a lot of your life in your bed sleeping and rejuvenating for the next day’s activity. Sleeping is a process that takes up roughly about about a third of the average person’s life. So it makes sense that you would want to make your bed comfortable and a pleasure to be in. It also is a nice bonus if the bedding you choose enhances the overall decor of your home and is pleasing to the eye.

Bed sheets are an important part of the overall bedding items used on a bed, and here are a few guidelines for choosing high quality bed sheets that you will be happy with:

Size is a very important factor in choosing bed sheets. It used to be that most mattresses were pretty standard sizes and so you could buy sheets in genralized categories like “Full”, “Queen”, and “King”, and be reasonably sure that they would fit right out of the box. But lately, mattress manufacturers have gone to adding more features to their mattresses to make them appeal to a wider range of customers, like adding pillow tops on one side or even both sides of the mattress. This added material makes the mattress much wider and therefore any bed sheets that are used on that bed will need to be bigger as well in order to fit properly. That’s why it’s a good idea to actually measure your bed in advance and make sure that the sheets will fit your particular mattress before buying them. You may have to buy one category larger or more to fit your bed.

Thread count is another important consideration when buying bed sheets. Thread count per inch, or TPI, states how many threads are in a square inch of the bed sheet material. Generally speaking, anything over 250 makes for a soft, comfortable feel, and also tends to last longer and hold up under more use. Try to avoid bed sheets that have very low thread counts under 200.

The kind of material used for bed sheets can vary considerably, from cotton to exotic silks. Cotton seems to be the most popular, but you may also want to experiment with flannels, and cotton mixed fabrics. Satins and silks are considered very high end and tend to be expensive, but some people really enjoy them as bed sheets, and wouldn’t use anything else.

After practical considerations such as these are made, you just have to decide what colors and designs that you want on your bed and we recommend that you try to stay within the overall theme of your bedroom’s decor. Selecting bed sheets is is simple if you follow these basic guidelines, and they will reward you with years of good service.
