Bunk Beds - Safety Checklist When Shopping

Mattress No Comments »

Buying a bunk bed should not be a window shopping type purchase. You must do your research before handing over your credit card number to the store. Be sure to shop many different stores both online and brick and mortar.

Just because Bunk Beds look great doesnt mean that they will be safe and secure and built with quality materials and craftsmanship. After all, it is our children that will be sleeping and playing on them so you need to educate yourself on what to look for.

The first decision you need to make is what type of bed you want your children to have, a bunk, loft, triple, twin, wood or metal. Second is the safety of the bunk bed. After you have reached your bedding type then consider the following safety checklist when shopping:

Find a dealer you can trust. Make sure they stand behind their products and can answer any questions regarding the safety of the bed.

Find out the weight limits on the bunk bed you want to purchase. Last thing you need is to get the bunk bed home and assembled to later find out that the bunk cant handle the required weight.

Find out if the bottom of the bed frames has enough room for a box spring mattress to go under the childs mattress or if the beds have wooden supports for the mattress to sit on. Having a box spring mattress provides more comfort and support.

Make sure that the bunk beds have plenty of room on the bottom bunk for the kids to sit on comfortably. This will also help keep the kids from always playing on the top bunk where it can be more dangerous.

Look to see if the bunk beds have a safety sticker outlining the safety guidelines for the bed.

Make sure the bunk bed is made of strong, quality materials. You can shake the bed to see if it is durable and stable. Ask or look to see if the bunk bed is made out of solid wood or if it is made using particle board. Particle board isnt as strong as solid wood.

Make sure the corners and edges on the bunk bed are smooth and rounded. Sharp or blunt edges can serve up many bumps and bruises.

The ladder should be securely attached and be wide enough for your child to climb. The ladder should also not be removable by children. Also, make sure the rungs on the ladder are properly spaced; they should not have to take a large step up to step on the next rung.

Make sure the bunk beds have guardrails all the way around the bed and cannot be removed by children. The guardrails should have to be removed by removing a fastener device or some type of combination pressure lifting.

Following these steps when shopping for bunk beds will help ensure your childrens safety when playing or sleeping in their new bunk bed. And it will also give you a peace of mind when making the purchase.

Benefits Of Adjustable Beds

Mattress No Comments »

Choosing a comfortable bed and mattress

The type of bed and mattress is a critical decision for people with back problems. While little is known about the type of mattress is good for the back and little medical information about adjustable beds, there are still a lot of questions as to whether or not an adjustable bed is a better alternative for flat mattresses for people suffering from back problems.

How an adjustable bed works

As the name implies, adjustable beds (also called a Semi-Fowler bed), can be attuned to various positions. Sleeping slightly inclined gives comfort to people with back problems with the upper body slightly elevated than the lower body and support to the knees at a slight angle. This position eases some stress off the lower back. It provides support to the spinal curves and lightens the pressure on the entire body.

Potential benefits of an adjustable bed

An adjustable bed provides comfort sleeping slightly inclined compared to lying on a regular flat mattress. How certain back conditions can be lightened up and give more comfort provided to people are seen in the following situations

* Degenerative spondylolisthesis. Adjustable beds reduces the pain discomfort in the lower back allowing a comfortable sleep the rest of the night.

* Osteoarthritis. This back problem is accompanied by stiffness and sore during the morning. Adjustable beds give better support by lessening compression in the joints.

* Spinal stenosis. People with this back problem find comfort bending forward rather than standing upright. Flat mattresses provide lesser comfort compared to sleeping inclined which is offered by adjustable beds.

After undergoing surgery in the lower back, patients felt more comfort using adjustable beds compared to flat mattresses.

While a patient may not be sure of the benefits from an adjustable bed or is unsure of purchasing a new bed, a possible option is by propping up the upper body by using pillows beneath the knees.

Patient’s preference should determine the choice of bed and mattress

Sleeping comfort is still the determining factor in the choice of bed or mattress. No particular type of mattress or bed is guaranteed to work for all patients, and no medical studies proves that adjustable beds are preferable. Whatever bed or mattress gives sleep comfort without extra pain is deemed as the best option.

Sleeping or lying down is the only time in which complete relaxation is experienced by the muscles, ligaments and the spine. A person suffering from a back injury needs to have a good sleep in order to help in the healing process.

Beds - Discounts Should Be Asked For

Mattress No Comments »

Ok so you need to get a youth bunk bed, wooden bunk bed or some other kind of bed item or accessory, lets imagine for a minute you have chosen the bed store from which to purchase from and your finger is just about to press the buy icon, did you contemplate asking this bed merchant for a discount? The answer is probably no.

Previously before people were able to get access to things like loft bed with trundles and other great bed products with the help of the web you would visit your closest bedding supplier, choose a product that was being sold at a discount and hand over the cash. I personally am one of those people who would pick out something like a double bed frame or another good bedding merchandise with the full intention of bargaining with the store owner in order to get a modest price discount.

Requesting cost reduction whilst you are acquiring a bed or related item might sound all very nice when a customer is actually visiting a bed store but surely this won’t be applicable to purchasing items via internet based bedding vendors and such like? well this is not so because you are about to find out about the art of haggling for a bargain bed via the internet. So for example say you have visited a number of bed portals and are aware of the rough cost of the item or the bedding accessory you wish to acquire [ again lets suppose you are needing a double bunk bed kit ], now make a note of all the smaller bed internet stores, what you are hunting for is a bed or bedding supplier that clearly not one of the well known vendors or corporations. As soon as you have your list of the smaller bed specialists you are prepared to do virtual battle in order to get a knock down bed purchase.

The main thing to be aware of is that nearly all the small bed portals will be more likely to deal with you because they will probably be more eager to obtain a sale and maybe your future custom. Now lets pretend you need a twin size bed frame or king size bed mattress, to be quite honest the details of the bed or goods you are looking for, simply pick about 7 of the smaller bed websites you have discovered and email them the details of the best priced item you are interested in ordering, simply ask all the vendors, might they possibly be able to offer you some type of discount in order to compete with the other prices, explain to these folk that you would really prefer to do business with a family oriented bed business instead of a large uncaring chain.

If you are willing to put in a little extra time when buying a bed then hopefully the chances are your extra work will be well worthwhile and the bargains you are given will be well worth both your trouble and work.

The Importance of Waterbed Sheets

Mattress No Comments »

Waterbeds provide a unique sleeping experience. They can be great for stress relief and curing insomnia. In order to keep bedding in place overnight, waterbeds require special sheets. There are numerous types of material used to weave the sheets, giving consumers a wide choice of fabrics. Each type of fabric offers its own unique advantages. Waterbed sheets come in an endless array of colors and patterns, allowing buyers to pick the color and design that best matches the rest of the room. One unique feature of many waterbed sheet sets is the corner pocket design, which lets users firmly place the sheets on the bed, assuring that they wont move when you are trying to sleep.

Some popular fabrics used to make waterbed sheets are cotton, satin and flannel. Each fabric offers distinct advantages, one is not necessarily better than the others. Waterbed sheets come with different thread counts. A thread count is the number of threads per square inch of fabric. Generally, the higher the thread count, the softer the sheet. Sheets with higher thread counts are more expensive, also. It is a good idea to purchase sheets with a thread count of at least 180. Many experts say that sheets with thread counts above 380 are not a good deal, as they do not provide much more comfort and may not last as long as sheets with slightly lower thread counts. Most sheet sets have thread counts between 180 and 200, which is perfect for most people.

Waterbed sheets come in countless colors and patterns. There are sheets available in every imaginable solid color, from black to burgundy to pink. Most of these colors are available in all major fabric types. Aside from solid colors, waterbed sheets come in unique patterns. People can choose waterbed sheets to match the colors in their bedroom. Waterbed sheets can also have designs that appeal to children, like dinosaurs or racecars.

A major feature of waterbed sheets is their construction. Most modern waterbed sheet sets have the top sheet connected to the fitted sheet. It is usually sewn to the center of the foot of the fitted sheet. This prevents the sleeper from having to remake the bed daily. Another interesting feature of waterbed sheets is the corner pocket design. The fitted sheet has large amounts of fabric in the corners surrounded by elastic that are placed under the mattress one corner at a time. Once the corners are set, they will not shift until they are taken off of the bed.

It is possible to use standard sheets on a waterbed, but it is more comfortable and more convenient to use sheets specifically made for the beds. Waterbed sheets come in so many fabrics and colors that even the most particular shoppers will find sheets to fit their personal tastes.

All About The Mattress!

Mattress No Comments »

Those of us who think that mattresses are just something to plunk ourselves on and while away the night, couldn’t be more wrong. We simply might have to rethink again. The fact is that we spend one-fourth of our lives in bed and what should demand our maximum attention often goes unnoticed- for example the mattress that we sleep on.

We make the mistake of undermining the importance of mattresses by considering them to be just another part of our furniture. But this is not so. A bad mattress can be worse than the cavity in your tooth. It can cause spinal problems, muscles aches and sleep problems. The net result would be a stressed head over an equally unhealthy body.

So be very careful about choosing the mattress where you will be spending a good proportion of your life.

There are different types of mattresses available in the market today and what we decide to buy depends solely on our needs and specifications. For some foam mattresses might be the ideal choice while you may find others swearing by a spring mattress. Waterbeds and airbeds are other popular form of mattresses with their own set of merits and demerits to follow. The reason why people don’t prefer air- beds is because they are designed for temporary sleeping rather than daily usage. Its good to have an air mattress around when you are out camping or if you have guests over at your place. As for the water beds, they aren’t considered to be very practical either because of the weight that they carry. Many homes are not designed to take the weight of a waterbed in one place.

A very popular myth running amongst most people is that hard mattresses are better in comparison to the softer ones. But this is not necessarily true. What is more important is the consistency of the surface of the mattress. The mattress should not cause pressure points in your body and leave you feeling sore. It should feel comfortable and should be in alignment with your spine so as to avoid any unwanted pressure on your other muscles and body parts.

What Is The Right Time To Change Your Mattress?

It is very essential for the user to know when his mattress needs to be replaced. Sometimes the regular use of the mattress might leave behind the impression of your body on it. In such cases you should try rotating or turning your mattress every three months at the least. Moreover the most important signal that your mattress might give you will be its inability to help you in a good nights sleep. Thats right- when you start feeling uncomfortable in your old mattress or if you get up every morning with a sore back you can be sure that your mattress is desperately crying out for its retirement.

If you are prepared to buy a new replacement for your mattress be sure to check it out for yourself. Lie down on it and see if you are comfortable enough. If it meets both your price as well as comfort level then you can be sure that you have made the right choice!

Sleeping Bag Liners Instead Of Bags

Mattress No Comments »

Sleeping bag liners for camping? My friend Dion made fun of my “poor excuse for a sleeping bag,” but it kept me warm as the temperature dropped to the low forties, and it weighed only five ounces. We were camping on the banks of the Manistee River in Michigan.

So, how did it a sleeping bag liner keep me warm? The real secret was the fifteen minutes we spent gathering dead, dry bracken ferns to build a two-foot thick mattress. We set the tent on that. Then, in my liner with all my clothes on, I was fine. Actually, I’ve rarely slept as well camping as I did that night.

Using Sleeping Bag Liners Instead Of Bags

You can buy light sleeping bag liners from Campmor and other suppliers, or do like I did. I sewed a simple one of bargain-bin nylon material ($1/yard) obtained at Walmart. Buy the lightest nylon or polyester material you can find. Depending on what you use and how big you make it, it should weigh between four and nine ounces.

I found I could stay warm with a light sleeping bag liner in autumn, at a few degrees above freezing, so this strategy should work well for summer nights in the sixties. Be careful, of course. It could be dangerous, or at least uncomfortable enough to ruin your trip. Test this strategy near home, and know yourself and your enviroment.

You may want to learn a few tricks for staying warm if you try this strategy. When it isn’t too humid you can breath in your bag, for example. Many backpackers will tell you not to do this, because you’ll be damp in the morning, but in a dry enviroment you’ll dry quickly once you hit the trail. Spread the liner out to dry during a break.

Just as I did the first time, you can also use a mattress of dried plants. Use dead leaves, palm fronds, grass, cattail leaves, some softer tree barks, etc. A mattress of this sort insulates you from the ground, which normally takes away much of your body heat. Scatter the leaves in the morning so they won’t smother the plants underneath.

Try to go to bed warm. If you’re warm when you get into your sleeping bag, you’re more likely to stay warm through the night. If you start out shivering, it’s difficult to warm up, especially in a thin bag.

These are options, but not recommendations. I’ve gone out with nothing more than a bivy sack in my jacket pocket, but I’m not recommending that either. This is just to present all the possible options for the ultralight backpacker. One of those options is sleeping bag liners.

More tricks for staying warm: Hot tea before going to sleep… Exercise a bit… Cover yourself with extra clothes… Elevate your feet slightly… Go to sleep earlier or later. Experiment to see what works best for you.

The Truth About Baby Bedding

Mattress No Comments »

Imagine your little baby in her nursery. So happy in the colorful new home you have prepared for her. Watching the Mobile. Lying down comfortably in her crib.

Comfortably in her crib. That depends on the bedding sets you use. Babies have very delicate skin. A baby’s skin is so much thinner than adult skin. Some babies are very sensitive to their surroundings.

The first thing you have to take into consideration when it comes to baby bedding, is comfort. Will the fabric make baby’s skin itch?

Ideally, the best fabric to use for baby bedding is cotton. Preferably 100% cotton sheets in summer, soft warm flannel for winter. Wool may be itchy but that depends on the baby.

Next, because babies have such sensitive skin, you must keep the crib bedding clean and dry. Babies urine and pass motion frequently in their clothes. If their nappies leak, the bedding gets stained.

Disposable diapers are way more convenient as compare to cloth nappies. With cloth nappies, the nappies leak every time the baby urines which can be nightmarish for an exhausted new mother to clean up after. Disposable diapers allow the baby to stay dry after a few rounds of urine, but once baby strains her face and you know she has just moved her bowels, do change her diaper.

When baby dirties herself, clean her up right away. Leave her in dirty nappies longer than necessary and she will probably develop a nappy rash. Babies with nappy rash itch, cry a lot and are generally miserable. Keep a tube of diaper rash cream at hand to treat the problem, just in case.

You can get these baby products are very affordable prices at Cheapest Sale Baby Products.

A vinyl cover over the mattress itself keeps the mattress from getting soaked through. Remember to cover it with clean cotton bedding and to change it whenever it gets dirty. You do not want baby to suffer from skin allergies from dirty bed linen.

For safety sake, get baby to sleep face up or on the side. Don’t let baby sleep lying on its stomach. A BBC article about cot deaths links cot deaths with the baby sleeping on its stomach - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/520993.stm

Finally, since baby is going to spend most of her time in the crib, even while she is awake, give her something to look at. Cotton baby bedding with friendly patterns, little animals, or other interesting pictures keep her occupied, and stimulate her mind. Plain white crib bedding sets without any patterns are really boring. They do not give baby anything to look at. To make matters worse, plain sheets show up stains glaringly. Patterned bedding sets are more forgiving in this aspect. Besides, babies would find pattern bedding more interesting.

How To Choose A Good Camping Bed

Good Camping Beds

Camping is a great way to enjoy the outdoors. But, nothing will bring that good time to a halt faster than having to sleep on cold, lumpy ground. Being uncomfortable will hamper sleep and make everyone irritable and tired. Using good quality bedding however, will help make sleeping outdoors much more comfortable, allowing a good nights sleep. You can wake up refreshed and ready to start your day hiking or canoeing or just relaxing.

Sleeping bags are the traditional method of sleeping outdoors, but putting even the best sleeping bag on the hard ground can prove uncomfortable. Using a camping bed in conjunction with a sleeping bag can provide comfort and warmth. Camping beds are sold in outdoor sporting goods stores and can also be found by shopping on the Internet. There are a variety of camping beds available and one is sure to meet your needs.

Inflatable beds are beds that are cushioned with air. These require use of an air compressor or pump to inflate. There are also self inflating beds available which provide convenience but cost a little more. The beds provide a comfortable sleeping area. Some inflatable beds are bulky, though, and may be also be heavy. Because they are inflatable, there is also chance for puncture. Ensure they are used on flat ground with no sharp objects in the way. Inflatable beds come in single sizes all the way up to king size to fit more than one person.

Cots are a great way to stay off the ground. Because they are raised, these are ideal for use in wet weather or cold weather. Adding a sleeping bag on top of the cot will provide warmth and a bit more cushion. Cots are portable and fold up easily to store in small areas. However, they may be awkward to carry long distances. Cots typically are for single use and have weight limitations.

Sleeping mats are foam liners that are set beneath a sleeping bag for added comfort. These mats are quickly becoming standard gear for camping use. The foam absorbs any rocks or hard surfaces that may prevent a restful sleep. These mats come in varying thicknesses and roll up for convenient storage. Sleeping mats are generally easy to carry and are a good option for use when not near a permanent camp site. Smaller thickness mats may provide minimal padding, so it advisable to invest in a high quality, thick mat.

Choose a camp bed with care. Consider the type of environment you will be in and weather conditions before making a decision. If you need to walk a distance from your parking area for sleeping, consider the weight and portability of the type of bed. Use of a camping bed can provide a much more restful sleep than sleeping on hard, rocky ground.

Get Into Bed with Ralph Lauren!!!

Mattress No Comments »

I was at Macy’s a few weeks ago, for an afternoon of shopping with a good friend. As you may recall from my previous articles, I have a slight obsession for designer bed sheets. I know it sounds crazy, but I don’t have time to explain here and now. Let’s get back to my story. So we were shopping at Macy’s, and I just had to look at their bedding section. It was there that I discovered some of the nicest bed sheets I have ever seen.

Ralph Lauren has been a famous designer for many years, and in recent years his company has branched out into a complete line of furnishings for your home. I don’t know why I didn’t bother to check these out sooner. I have always been a fan of Ralph Lauren’s Polo line, but it never occurred to me to check out his line of sheets and bedding. I had no idea what I was missing.

I was immediately taken with the Hope Chest line of bedding. The name of this distinctive line of sheets should tell you something about them. They are inspired by the vintage materials you might find in your grandmother’s house. These are stunningly crisp white sheets, with borders stitched with delicate white embroidery. I particularly like the duvet cover that is part of this collection, which features intricate hemstitching and a wonderful floral lace motif.

I also fell completely in love with the Greycliff collection. It evokes a classic style in the equestrian tradition with the use of Highland tartans, intricate paisley, and a subtle gun-check plaid. These gorgeous designs are set against crisp, white trousseau linens. The sheets have a thread count of 370, and are crafted from fine cotton sateen. The blanket, in gun-check plaid, adds a subtle contrast with the tartan pattern of the bed sheets. It is also made from 100% wool, for added warmth on those cold winter nights.

As I tend to be a rather impulsive shopper, especially when it comes to bedding, I decided to go for a coffee and mull it over. As my friend and I chatted over a steaming cup of Joe, I found myself daydreaming about the Greycliff collection. I just couldn’t keep myself from thinking about them! I have to wonder if this is beginning to be a problem. I thought about my family coming to visit next month from Scotland, and I was sure they would love them, too. I was standing in the check-out a few minutes laterwith both sets.
