A Camp Bed Changed My Life

Mattress No Comments »

I like Camping, no doubt about it; and I like it all year. Most people only go camping when the weather is warm and sunny, but not me. I like the atmosphere between people out there, where you are far from home and all the daily stuff is out of your mind for a few days. I simply love it.

Back in time when I was a rookie in this lifestyle, a buddy of mine, Steven and his wife, invited me and my wife on a camping trip to the coast. I said sure, why not try it out. After a day, which I thought was great because of all these nice people around, the night was still to come. After sleeping on a hard surface, which by the way was fairly cold as well, I woke up with a painful and very sore back. I was groggy because I did not get enough rest during the worst night thinkable.

After that I did not think that this camping business was anything special, on the contrary I thought it was only for people who liked to torture themselves, and it was definitely not my idea of fun and relaxation. I was sure that camping was only going to be a part of my life this one time only.

I it was not for my good buddy and friend Steven, I probably would not be going camping today. Steven that was a veteran when it came to camping, told me that if the sore back thing was my only dislike about the hole deal, then he knew exactly what I needed a Camp Bed. Since I was already in on this deal for three more nights anyway, I agreed on giving it a go. I admit my mind was already determined that camping was not for me, so this camp bed had better pull up some magic trick or something like that to convince me otherwise.

We got our hands on a camp bed and I slept in a full night, without waking up one single time during the night. They had to wake me up the next morning. I had a wonderful sleep and my back felt better they made me admit it, much against my proud will.

And here I am many years later, still going camping. I can truly say that a camp bed changed my life that day, and made a huge impact on how I chose to live a more outdoor life in the future.

So if you are bit in doubt whether you should get a camp bed or not don’t be.

Thank you for your time.

Taking Care of Futon Frames, Furniture, and Mattresses

Mattress No Comments »

So you have bought a futon as a second bed, just in case you have visitors from another town. You not only use the futon as a bed for a guest, but also as a sofa during the day. How would you go about caring for this piece of furniture?

How you look after your futon frame and other furniture depends on whether the frame is made of hardwood or metal. In case it is made of hardwood, you would dust it, remove the mattress, and polish it with furniture polish at timely intervals. You would ensure that no one scratches the wood frame. If the futon frame is a platform bed, then you would ensure that the headboard is free of scratches. Check that your futon or platform bed is free of termites and other pests, because these could damage the wood. If you are using a futon bunk bed made of metal, then you would have to check for rust and get the frame freshly painted every couple of years.

When caring for mattresses, cushions and comforters, you can do no better than the Japanese and see that these are aired during the summer. Find out if you can use the terrace in your apartment house, if you don’t have a balcony. You can also get two sets of futon, comforter, and cushion covers made, along with window treatments, for the spring-summer and autumn-winter seasons. You can have one set dry cleaned while you use the second.

As for furniture, such as tables, you will need to use coasters while serving tea or coffee, and table stands, while serving hot or cold meals. The aim is to avoid damaging the wood by placing excessively hot or excessively cold items on the surface. You will also check your furniture for pests of all kinds and polish it at regular intervals.

When using screens, you need to take care of the frame and the body of the screen as well. The frame and the body could be made of wood, in which case you need to dust and polish on a regular basis. Else the frame could be wooden and the rest of the screen could consist of canvas or plastic panels that depict a scene of some kind. In this case, you would dust and polish the frame and ensure that the body of the screen is not torn or damaged.

Tips on Selecting a Futon Bed

Mattress No Comments »

There are many types of futons, also known as a futon bed, and they can possess many advantages for you and your home. They are very versatile, and can be changed from a bed to a couch usually in a very short time with little effort at all. That is basically what a futon bed is: a pece of furniture that can be used as either a bed or a sofa. They are usually very affordable and can be purchased as a set. Futons, otherwise known as futon beds, are usually made up of a mattress, a futon cover, and a frame.

The futon mattress of a futon bed is usually not as thick as a regular bed mattress, and can be filled with foam, cotton, innersprings, polyester and/or viscoelastic foam. These can be on their own or layered to provide a nice level of comfort and durability, and are usually precision tufted to keep the contents of your futon mattress from shifting. Of course, the more you pay, the higher quality mattress you can expect to get.

The frame of a futon bed, however can be pretty much whatever you want it to be. They can be made of wood, such as oak, pine, maple, and others can be made of metal or rattan. Whatever they are made of, you can be sure to easily find one with a great design and that is stylish enough to fit the decor of your home to a “T”.

The thing about the futon bed is that they can be a great solution to any office, dorm room, bonus room or any other room where space can be a concern. They are fantastic for a home office, because they can transform your home office into an extra bedroom in very little time to accommodate your house guests. Most futons are either bi-fold or tri-fold, which basically describes the number of flat surfaces that make up the futon. When you pick out the futon bed for you, make sure you open and close it, because you want something that effortlessly converts from a bed to a couch for you. After all, who wants to struggle with a heavy mattress and frame when you are ready for bed? The easier the better. So whatever look you go with, make sure the design is convenient like a futon should be.

How To Clean A Mattress

Mattress No Comments »

I work for the housekeeping department in one of the most reputed hotels in my town and mattresses are my speciality. Everything from purchasing decision to their maintenance is handled by me. So, I guess I should not be surprised if every other day one of my friends or their friends calls up to asks me “How do I clean the mattress?”. Everyone wants a tip on how to clean the mattress.

As I kept repeating these tips time after time, I realized that there might be others who would want to know how to clean the mattress. So hear is what I learnt:

How to clean the mattress: Step 1-Prevention is better than cure

You must use a mattress pad. That is the first step to cleaning a mattress. Make sure that it is easy to wash and easy to remove and fit back.

How to clean the mattress: Step 2-Good old vacuuming

Vacuum the mattress often. Vacuum its sides, the box springs and every nook and corner. You set a routine. Vacuum the mattress every time you take mattress pad out to wash.

How to clean the mattress: Step 3-Flip and rotate

Flip the mattress and rotate it from time to time. This prevents rough use of the mattress and the pressure zones don’t get defined.

How to clean the mattress: Step 4- Stains and pains

Stains are inevitable; if you must clean them try using mild soaps. It would be even better if you could get upholstery shampoo.

How to clean the mattress: Step 5- The trade secret

We use something called Dry Suds to get rid of stubborn stains. It is easy to make. Mix a little detergent with warm water, beat it up in a beater. Now remove the froth and the stuff that remains is ideal to clean these stains.

How to clean the mattress: Step 6 Dry is Clean

Make sure that your mattress and mattress pads are dry and clean. You can occasionally air them in sun. If you work in the hotel industry like me and have to dry the mattresses at short notice before the customer arrives, there is nothing like a blow dryer. The hair dryer is ok at such times but it does not have the anti-bacterial properties of the sun. So drying it out in the sun is definitely the best option.

Kids Bunk Beds: How to keep your child safe.

Mattress No Comments »

Kids bunk beds are by far the most common types of bunk beds. Bunk beds were created for more functional, adult-oriented sleeping purposes, and one recognizable example of these bunk beds is the kind used in the military. The rise of kids bunk beds popularity is due to their ability to combine entertainment with functionality they get kids excited to go to sleep.

For many children, bunk beds are exciting. Many small children desperately want a big kid bed, especially those who recently graduated from a crib. Bunk beds have the advantage of allowing children to sleep above or below a sibling, and they are also a fun play space.

For all their fun and entertainment, however, bunk beds also come with significant safety risks. There is a need to educate parents about the risks associated with buying a bunk bed. The major safety risk is injuries resulting from kids falling from their beds, which usually occurs when kids are playing haphazardly and/or are left unsupervised for an extended period of time.

There are several ways to keep kids bunk beds safe. First and foremost, it is absolutely critical to maintain side guardrails on all sides of the upper bed. These guardrails must be secure in the event that children move around or roll during their sleep. In addition, another simple precaution is to not to allow children under the age of six to sleep in the upper bunk. In addition, ladder safety is very important. You should consider teaching your kids how to safely use the ladder of the bed, and warning them that horseplay on the ladder or upper bunk will not be tolerated. Finally, in rooms with kids bunk beds, night lights should be used to provide additional security in case the child in the top bunk wakes up during the night and has to exit the bed.

To be sure, your kids will love you for getting them a bunk bed. More than ever before, they will be excited to play in their rooms and go to bed at night. If you follow this advice for safety precautions and instructions on how to purchase a quality bed, kids bunk beds will also satisfy the needs of parents.

Popularity of Latex Mattresses

Mattress No Comments »

The mattress market is seeing a dramatic shift in the way people are buying beds. More and more people are seeing that the right bed can play a key role in being well rested and ache free.

Consequently they are turning away from their conventional innerspring mattresses which create pressure points that cause tossing and turning in search of a better alternative. Tempurpedic has poured money into advertising their viscoelastic memory foam mattresses, fueling interest in spring free mattresses.

People who are allured by the intrigue of the space foam are often unfulfilled by the lifeless feel of memory foam, and begin searching in a new direction. As a result latex mattress makers are experiencing a substantial boom in sales.

Latex international, the top US manufacturer of latex mattress components and latex pillows, is currently generating sales around $80 million a year showing an average increase of approximately 30 percent a year since 2001. With high end mattresses showing an industry average increase of roughly 20 percent, latex mattress producers are ahead of the curve.

This astounding and steady increase in sales is not because of some ingenious new marketing scheme, it simply reflects the consumer response to a quality product. Latex mattresses provide a sleeping surface that relieves pressure points better than memory foam.

They are naturally dust mite resistant and anti microbial, which makes an incredible difference to people who suffer from allergies and asthma. Unlike other mattresses on the market today latex mattresses are biodegradable, and are made from natural, sustainable resources. With an average life span of 20 years, nearly twice those of other beds, latex mattresses outlast the competition.

Looking to the future this trend has no end in sight. With the price of polyurethane foam recently jumping a whopping 55% due to factory closures, the margin between premium latex mattresses and other mattresses narrows giving latex the clear advantage.

A Good Nights Sleep: Choosing the Right Mattress

Mattress No Comments »

A good mattress should provide you with optimal support and comfort to help ensure you are ready to start the new day. Following are some key tips on choosing the right mattress for you.

Shop at a store that you trust. If you’re unsure of where to start, ask family and friends for suggestions.

Talk to salespeople who know the products. If you don’t get the assistance that you want, go elsewhere.

Don’t be strange bedfellows. If the beds for two, make sure your partner goes with you.

Take the time to test the mattresses out. Wear comfortable clothes and be ready to lay down.

Assess each mattress on its comfort, support, durability, and space.

A firm mattress doesn’t have to feel hard to touch. Firmness is determined by the design of the mattress.

Plan on buying a complete set - the mattress and the foundation (boxspring). Placing a new mattress on an old foundation will impede the performance and reduce the useful life of the mattress.

Shop for the best value, not the lowest price. A quality mattress is going to serve you the best in the long term.

Compare services when purchasing. How much for delivery? Will they remove your old mattress? Do they offer financing?

Remember, we spend almost one third of our life in bed, take care of yourself and buy a good quality, comfortable mattress.

Also remember that once your have purchased the right mattress, you need to take care of your investment.

Be sure to not remove the attached tags, as they contain important care information.

Don’t allow the kids (or grown-ups) to jump on the bed.

Make sure that you keep a washable pad/mattress protector on the bed.

Don’t use the side handles to lift the mattress, these are to assist with positioning the mattress only.

Regularly rotate and turn your mattress and boxspring. This should be done every few weeks after purchase, and then every few months after that. Some manufacturers recommend not rotating a sleep set, be sure to check for this.
